CLAUSON GOES FOR MIDGET “GRAND SLAM” AT ORP

Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Ind. stands on the virge of a USAC Midget “Grand Slam” as he prepares for the May 29 “Night Before the 500” classic at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Ind.

Clauson has strung together back-to-back-to-back victories in three races with tradition dating to pre-1980 and could add the fourth jewel with a May 29 win at ORP.

Last May Clauson won the prestigious Belleville (Kansas) Midget Nationals, then added the “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Irwindale, Calif. in November. This past May 8 Clauson won the “Hut Hundred” at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. Nobody has ever won all four of these events in succession.

Only two drivers can lay claim to victories in all four races. They are Bobby East and Jason Leffler. Clauson will have to contend with East on May 29. East won the “Night Before the 500” at ORP in 2008.

In 2004 East nearly swept all four races! He won Belleville, the Hut Hundred and Turkey Night and finished third in the Night Before the 500. Leffler’s victories in these classic events spanned 1997 to 2005!

“I ran second last year and I look forward to going back this year,” says Clauson, who came back to win the Midget race at ORP last July. “It would be awesome to add this race to my resume. ORP is a big fast racy place and always offers great racing for the competitors and the fans.”

East has posted two feature wins and two seconds already this year to assume the early USAC Mopar National Midget point lead going into this weekend’s race at Newton, Iowa, the last before ORP.

Clauson has six feature wins and a second dating back to last year’s “Indiana Midget Week.” Oh, Clauson also won that title too! He’ll pilot the Toyota/Nos Energy Drink Beast/TRD Toyota entry for Corey Tucker Racing/Keith Kunz Motorsports and BCI in the May 29 classic.

BILLY PAUCH Jr. USES HIS MASTERY OF GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY TO GRAB HIS SECOND ARDC MIDGET WIN OF THE SEASON

The Midgets of the American Drivers Racing Club visited Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA for the first time Saturday night and it was speedway Modified regular, Billy Pauch Jr. coming away with the win.

At the start of the feature, before most of the field even crossed the Start Finish Line, a flip by Mike Miller stopped the action. Also involved were Point Leader, Steve Buckwalter, who had to be towed to the pits and Steve Lenig who was able to continue with a severely bent shock.

On the restart, Jason Rice as able to grab the lead from his pole starting position followed by Andrew Hannula and Trevor Kobylarz. Kobylarz, who is finishing up his junior year at Exeter High School near Reading, PA, traveled the low groove and was able to get by Rice for the lead. Kobylarz opened up a ten car advantage but saw his lead wiped out by a lap 11 caution.

On the restart Kobylarz went back downstairs while Drew Heistand started to apply pressure on the high side. Meanwhile the 18th starting Billy Pauch Jr. slipped into third, also by running up at the rail.

Pauch Jr. and Heistand were both able to get by Kobylarz and were running first and second when the yellow was unfurled again on lap 19. “ I was excited there for a while, I was stuck in traffic but hats off to Trevor and Drew there. I’ve known Trevor since he was a little kid and I hated to take it away from him but I just had a roll going on the top.” Pauch Jr. later admitted in victory lane.

On the restart, Pauch Jr. was able to check out in his Burkes Trucking number 54 but right behind him Kobylarz and Heistand were entertaining the near capacity crowd, dueling for second.

A caution on lap 22 slowed the field again but Pauch Jr. had the field covered as he led the final three laps, winning by 1.003 seconds over Kobylarz and Heistand.

“I’ve gone 2 for 2 this year n ARDC competition and I can’t complain. I hope we can get them here in a few weeks when USAC’s here and hopefully I can get a wingless Sprint Car ride and really see how we can do it.” Pauch Jr. said.

Finishing in fourth was Bruce Buckwalter Jr. while defending ARDC Champion Frank Polimeda finished fifth.

Sixth through tenth were PJ Gargiulo, Eric Heydenreich, Tim Buckwalter, Brett Arndt and Tracy Readinger.

Heat races for the 35 ARDC Midgets in attendance went to, Frank Polimeda, rookie Alex Bright and Donnie Trent. Steve Buckwalter won the consolation.

NOTES: “Liquid” Lou Cicconi was in action in the Zipps #99. It was Cicconi’s first dirt track start in 18 years. Other new cars were, Brett Conkling from Westwood, NJ and former Western PA 410 Sprint Car driver, Joe Butera. Butera’s first ever Midget start was last December at the Bullring Nationals in Missouri. Ryan Smith will be racing in Newtown Iowa next weekend with the USAC Silver Crown cars. Bruce Buckwalter Jr. had the RAACE Foundation on his car and will be racing to raise money for them throughout the season along with other racing related charities. Donnie Hoffman flipped his Midget at the start of the first heat race.

“BOOT HILL SHOWDOWN” FRIDAY-SATURDAY AT DODGE CITY

The 2010 USAC/SMRS Great Plains Midget Series resumes this weekend with back-to-back events at Dodge City (Kans.) Raceway Park.

Brad Loyet, who won last year’s inaugural USAC/SMRS title, has a 22-point lead over Don Droud Jr. going into the Dodge City races. Zach Daum, USAC’s 2009 Mopar National Midget “Rookie of the Year,” is third in the standings, only 32 back.

The Friday and Saturday night “Boot Hill Showdown” races continue a tradition of USAC racing in the Sunflower state which dates back to a 1957 race at Wichita, Kans. won by Bob Tattersall.

Loyet scored a pair of USAC/SMRS Midget feature wins last year in Kansas, taking back-to-back races at Beloit.

VENTURA HOSTS FOCUSES, YOUNG GUNS; FOCUSES ALSO AT SLC;

PETERSON, DRAKE TOP FOCUS FEATURES IN CALIFORNIA, SOUTH CAROLINA

USAC’s Ford Focuses and Young Guns continue their 2010 season this Saturday with events at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway and Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah,

The Western Ford Focuses and Young Guns compete at Ventura, while the Utah Ford Focus series continues at the Salt Lake City oval. Connor Kassik sits atop the current Western standings, while Michael Daniels is atop the Utah points. The Western Young Guns are currently paced by Brandon White.

Garrett Peterson of West Sacramento, Calif. led the final 30 laps to win Saturday night’s 35-lap USAC Western Ford Focus race at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif. He was also the fastest qualifier, won his heat race and won the dash. Keegan Walmer took second ahead of Cody Thompson, Cody Gerhardt and Dennis Simunovich. Walmer led the first five laps of the feature. The accompanying USAC Western Young Guns feature event was halted after an opening-lap tangle and cancelled. Keegan Walmer posted fastest qualifying time and Cody Thompson won the heat race.

Nick Drake of Mooresville, N.C., son of former USAC National Driving Champion Jay Drake, posted his initial USAC feature victory Saturday night at Dillon (S.C.) Motor Speedway, winning the 30-lap USAC Eastern/Carolina Ford Focus race in his Troy Cline Haas Automation/SEM Products Beast. Drake was the fourth race leader, pacing the final 16 laps after passing series point leader Scott Hunter on lap 15. Hunter took second ahead of Steven Intravaia, Justin Hommel and Brad Noffsinger. Rick Fedrizzi led the first seven laps, Cody Acton led lap eight and Hunter led the next six before Drake took command.

Drake is believed to be the first graduate of USAC’s Mopar .25 Midgets to post a victory in USAC Ford Focus competition.

DALTON ARMSTRONG WINS “PRUETT MEMORIAL” AT CMS

“John Andretti Night” is slated at the Indianapolis Speedrome May 26 and Dalton Armstrong of New Castle, Ind. will take the early USAC Regional Midget point lead into that event after winning Saturday night’s “Alex Pruett Memorial” at the Columbus (Ohio) Motor Speedway.

Armstrong is the early point leader in both the 2010 USAC Regional and USAC/WOMS Midget Series as a result of his 30-lap Columbus victory. Armstrong trailed Dillon Welch for three laps, then took the lead in his Bungee North America/Anderson’s Grain Beast/Mopar. He led the remaining 27 laps to beat Daniel Bedford, Welch, Cale Conley and Nick Wagner. Shane Hmiel was the fastest qualifier.

The USAC/WOMS Midget Series resumes with a June 12 race at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich. Highlights of Saturday’s race at Columbus will be aired on an upcoming episode of 3 Wide Life (www.3widelife.com/).
